I've tried to change the header background of the portfolio wide 3 column with space through the file path and through the theme settings yet I still have not been able to change the header image from the default image

Have you tried to change header background in theme settings > tab "Pages" > "Page contentype title"?

Please go to theme settings > Pages > Page Title > Add Page Title
Then fill all the information including url, page title, description and colors (this is a must) and upload the background image
(To get the page url, you go to the portfolio-wide-3-columns-with-space page, edit with Awecontent)
