I'm trying to add a slideshow to a specific node type. I am specifically working in md-news. Is there an easy way to do this using the tools given in the demo profile?

Yes, slideshow is "Featured content". When add article content, you'll see Featured checkbox in Publishing options, just click it, article will appear in featured slideshow
